"You're going where?" That pretty much summed up the conversation on an airline trip from Los Angeles to London, then London to Kuwait. Sixteen-plus hours in the air and a zillion time zones later we arrived in the dead of night.
Our first glimpse in the daylight revealed more BMWs, Benzes, Jags, Jeeps, Limos, and Cadillacs in one place than I ever thought possible. All thanks to oil, but truth be known, you see more people from India, Pakistan and the Philippines than Kuwaitis. Nerves about war have most of the wealthier Kuwaitis away.
Security at various hotels is much like the airport -- metal detectors, armed Kuwaiti guards, and that's just for room service.
I'm kidding about the room service, but I am struck by how much influence American business has abroad.
Sure, you'll find a McDonald's with a picture of a chicken sandwich wrapped in a pita bread, but there's even an Applebee's. "Eatin' good in the Kuwaiti neighborhood." It's on the sign, trust me.
We'll talk soon.
