UPDATED: 7:44 am PDT August 6, 2009

The number of confirmed cases of swine flu reported in San Diego County since the pandemic began earlier this year stood at 809 Thursday morning, health officials said.

Since June, 13 San Diego County residents have died from the swine flu, according to the county Health and Human Services Agency.

The latest death was reported Wednesday and involved a 72-year-old woman who had underlying medical conditions, the HHSA reported.

In addition to the 13 residents, two people have died locally from swine flu while visiting San Diego. They are not included in local statistics but are counted in their hometowns, according to the HHSA.

County health officials urged the public again this week to stay home from work or school if they have flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headaches, chills and fatigue.

Those with underlying medical conditions experiencing influenza-like symptoms should contact their doctor, according to the HHSA.
