Man Dies Climbing Cowles Mountain

POSTED: 6:05 pm PDT August 5, 2009

A man collapsed and died Wednesday while climbing Cowles Mountain by himself in the mid-afternoon, about four hours after a teen was overcome by the summer heat on the San Carlos-area peak and evacuated to a hospital.

A group of hikers found the 55-year-old man passed out on a path on the mountain in Mission Trails Regional Park shortly before 3:30 p.m. and made a 911 call, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

One of them performed CPR until a city helicopter crew arrived over the area and lowered down a medic, who took over the resuscitation attempt, SDFRD spokesman Maurice Luque said.

The man, whose name was withheld pending notification of his family, was pronounced dead at the scene about 4 p.m., Luque said.

The 14-year-old girl who was stricken by heat-related trauma in the late morning was flown to Rady Children's Hospital for treatment. Her condition was not released.

Wednesday's high temperature on the western side of the mountain was 87 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.
