A 68-year-old Valley Center man crashed his truck on State Route 163 in Hillcrest Tuesday after apparently suffering some type of medical emergency and was pronounced dead at a hospital, authorities said.

The motorist was southbound near Robinson Avenue about 12:45 p.m. when he lost control of his 2002 Ford F350, which veered off the left-hand side of the roadway, struck a guardrail and came to a stop in the center median, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Medics performed CPR on the man before taking him to nearby Scripps Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

His name was withheld pending notification of his family.
