OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- Residents in Oceanside can now get their groceries at an area Wal-Mart store, 10News reported. The Wal-Mart Supercenter, which combines a traditional discount store with a supermarket, opened its doors early Wednesday morning. The Supercenter is located at the intersection of Highway 76 and College Boulevard.Wal-Mart plans to open Supercenters in Chula Vista and Lakeside in the next year. However, the Supercenters have been strongly opposed by some San Diego, Poway and Vista residents, who have complained about the increase in traffic from the giant stores and the threat to small, privately owned supermarkets.Shoppers who talked to 10News cited cheaper prices as the reason they go to Wal-Mart.Shopper Deserie Smith said, "I think price-wise, it's going to bring in a lot of customers, not just for convenience but in a recession people are trying to save as much money as they can. It's almost a full size grocery store."The Oceanside Supercenter was built as an expansion to the 14-year-old Wal-Mart.Another 30,000 sq. ft. were added to the facility to accommodate the supermarket.
