OCEANSIDE -- Two Camp Pendleton-based Marines, a third man and a teenage boy face assault and weapons charges stemming from a weekend dispute that led to a non-injury shooting on a North County street, police reported Monday.

The early-morning violence in the 2300 block of Greenbrier Drive in Oceanside on Sunday stemmed from a prior argument the four suspects had gotten into, Sgt. Kelan Poorman said.

One of the servicemen, 26-year-old Dennis Lawshea, was driving through the area when he spotted the other three walking alongside the road and allegedly tried to run one or more of them down with his Ford Focus shortly before 2:30 a.m., according to Poorman.

The car struck Michael Harrison Washington, 21, knocking the Marine to the ground. Washington and one of his companions, Brady Sanford Brown, also 21, allegedly responded by pulling guns and opening fire on the departing vehicle.

The gunmen then got into another car along with the 17-year-old boy and sped off.

Officers responding to reports of gunfire stopped both vehicles in the area a short time later and took all four suspects into custody. When the patrol personnel approached Lawshea, they saw apparent bullet holes in the rear of his car, the sergeant said. In addition, the back windshield appeared to have been shot out.

Brown and Washington were arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, carrying a loaded firearm and possessing a stolen gun. Poorman said.

The teen, whose name was withheld because he is a minor, was booked into juvenile hall on the same two weapons charges.

In addition to an assault count, Lawshea was expected to face a DUI allegation.

The nature of the disagreement that led to the violent encounter was unclear.
