Education Officials Unhappy With Budget Deal

Many people in charge of education in California are not happy about the state's budget deal, 10News reported.

The new budget agreement will cut an estimated $6 billion from public education, and state Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell said he is not happy about it.

"It's very distressing," O'Connell told 10News. "Education has not been the top priority in Sacramento; I believe it needs to be."

He sees not only larger class sizes but cuts in counselors, nurses, librarians, the arts, sports, bussing and security.

San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Terry Grier doesn’t know how the cuts will affect the county’s largest district.

He said they've already faced $200 million in cuts in the last 18 months, and he said he hopes that will be enough to prevent more cuts.

At this point, he said he is not sure but one thing he is sure about is that any more cuts will be very difficult.

"We've cut right down past the muscle into the bone," Grier said. "There's not much more left to trim."

Grier and O'Connell made their comments during the kickoff of a program called the Summer Fun Café -- a program through the district and the San Diego Park and Recreation Department to provide free lunches for children during the summer.

President Barack Obama announced last week that $4.5 billion would be made available to states for education.

However, states must adopt standards linking teacher pay to student performance.

Currently, that is not allowed in California but O'Connell said he thinks the state will be competitive for the federal money because there are many criteria and teachers may be evaluated more on student progress.
