Council To Vote On San Diego Water Rate Increase

POSTED: 3:01 pm PDT July 22, 2009
UPDATED: 3:01 pm PDT July 22, 2009

A plan to raise water rates in San Diego was forwarded Wednesday to the City Council, which will vote on the issue in September.

The Natural Resources and Culture Committee voted unanimously to send the proposed 7.75 percent water rate increase to the full council for consideration Sept. 8.

If the hike is approved, a typical single-family home in San Diego will experience a water-bill increase of $4.73 a month to $65.76, according to a report from the Water Department.

The change would be effective Jan. 1, 2010.

According to the Water Department, the increase is needed to offset the higher cost of imported water from the San Diego County Water Authority.
