2014 San Diego County Fair now open

$4 admission deal available at Albertsons/Sav-on

DEL MAR, Calif. - The 2014 San Diego County Fair is now underway, and fair-goers can get in for just $4 on opening day. This year's theme for the fair, held annually at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, is "The Fab Fair," a tribute to the British Invasion that revolutionized the music industry 50 years ago. The theme exhibit includes Beatles memorabilia and photos from the band's appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in 1964.

The $4 admission ticket is available at your local Albertson's/Sav-on store when you spend a minimum of $10. The same deal applies for the midweek opening day on Wednesday, June 11.

Live music at the 2014 fair gets started Saturday with a performance by Third Eye Blind. The concert is the first in a series of concerts throughout the month-long fair and starts on the grandstand stage at 7:30 p.m. True 2 Crue takes to the Rock On Stage at 9 p.m.

Other opening-weekend events include a fire expo and demo derby in the Del Mar Arena between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., beer festivals in the paddock, Family Funville and Kids Zone featuring a wild west turkey stampede, and all the food, rides and games that make the San Diego County Fair the largest annual event in San Diego County.

Also part of this year's fair is the J.F.K. Experience, which includes a re-creation of the Oval Office, a replica fuselage of Air Force One and many personal items once owned by President and Mrs. Kennedy. The exhibit is at Surfside Race Place from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and has a $5 admission fee.

New eats are also on tap for this year's fair -- some healthier than others.

New to the fair this year are Chicken Charlie's Triple Decker Krispy Kreme Cheeseburger and Deep Fried Chicken Skins; the Smoked Jack Daniels Bacon-Wrapped Churro at Bacon A-Fair; and Sippers' Chocolate Peanut Butter Bacon Banana and Chocolate Peanut Butter Pretzel.

Also available will be a Chile Relleno Pretzel Burger from Grantburgers; a Grilled Cream Cheese Hot Dog, Frito Dog and Gourmet Grilled Cheese from the California Cheese Company; Reno's Fish & Chips Seafood Salad; Grinders' Cauliflower Sandwich; and Fruit Caboose's Banana Foster Pie, Black and White Sundae and Cowboy Sundae, which is served in a waffle cone shaped like a cowboy hat.

The 2014 San Diego County Fair runs through July 6. Admission is $14 for adults and $8 for ages 6-12 and 62-and-older. Admission is free for those 5 and younger. There's also a $24 season pass, and for those using the North County Transit District's Coaster, Sprinter or Breeze to get to the fairgrounds, there's a Fair Tripper pass available that includes round-trip transportation and fair admission for $15.
