SAN DIEGO -- A man and two 13-year-old boys were safely back on shore Monday after the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy personnel rescued them from a sailboat that began taking on water about 190 miles southwest of Point Loma. The trio, who had sailed out of San Diego en route for Hawaii, reported the leak in the 61-foot craft, called the Nordic Light, shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday, USCG Petty Officer Henry Dunphy said.A Coast Guard MH-60J Jayhawk helicopter took off from the agency's San Diego station, and a C-130 Hercules airplane launched from Air Station Sacramento to assist in the rescue.
The helicopter crew arrived at the sailboat's coordinates about 9:30 p.m. and established communication with the occupants, and the USS McClusky, a Navy frigate operating in the area, sent out a small boat with a team aboard to assist in bailing out and repairing the leaking private craft. After the sailboat was patched, the military vessels escorted it back to San Diego Harbor, arriving about 6 a.m. Monday, Dunphy said.
