Motorcycle Riders Honor Fallen Soldier

A group of motorcycle riders with a special mission took to the streets of Camp Pendleton to honor a soldier killed in Afghanistan, 10News reported.

One by one, members of the Patriot Guard Riders followed Pvt. First Class Nicholas Gideon to his final assignment Wednesday.

Gideon was killed in Afghanistan after insurgents attacked his unit with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades.

The group, made up mostly of military veterans, gathered before they joined Gideon's family at Camp Pendleton where the Patriot Guard's body landed and where they held a short ceremony before riding in a procession all the way to a mortuary in Temecula.

"Every one of our boys needs to be remembered, and to me they are all our boys," said Joyce Orrell, who joined the group's Southern California chapter three years ago when her son joined the Marines.

The group's main goal is to show respect for fallen heroes, their families and communities across the nation.

"When an occurrence happens like it happened to this young man, he has to have all the respect and honor as possible; that's why we do it," said Navy veteran Tom Slaughter.

10News was not allowed on the base Wednesday, but a picture of Gideon's casket was captured at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. Earlier this year, President Barack Obama lifted a ban on photographing flag-draped caskets at the base.

"I think Americans need to see our boys are coming home," said Orrell.

Aside from honoring fallen soldiers riders also gather for happier moments like homecomings.

But Wednesday was about Gideon, who left behind five siblings, his parents and a fiancée.

"Today we got to honor Nicholas Gideon, and we want his family to know there are a lot of people all over the country praying for them and their son," said Slaughter.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, and Gideon will be laid to rest at Riverside National Cemetery.

Gideon was stationed at Fort Richardson in Alaska.
