SAN DIEGO -- A crowd gathered near Camp Pendleton Friday night to remember a sailor whose family believes he was killed because he was gay, 10News' Angele Ringo reported. Organizers said the family of August Provost deserves to know all the facts and, so far, the Navy has given little information about his death.Full military honors were given for boatswain's mate August Provost, who was buried Friday in his hometown of Houston. The sailor was shot to death June 30th while standing guard at Camp Pendleton. Friends and family believe Provost was targeted because he was gay.
"There are people who don't support gays and I think it's just horrible because a person should be entitiled to who they are no matter what," Provost's cousin, Bianca Guilory, said. The Navy has released few details but has said there is no evidence to sugest a hate crime and that anyone there that night would have met the same fate."Another sailor could have been on that post and would have been the victim of this crime," Captain Ed Harrington of the U.S. Navy said.Provost was new to the Navy and was assigned to the base last September. Family members said that he was harrassed the entire time.As he's laid to rest in Houston, organizers of this event say the family will never truly know peace until they know the truth....Lisa Kove, Executive Director of DOD Federal Globe, said, "They deserve more than justice. They derserve to know that everything was done possible for their son to be treated... that he was treated with respect and that the military did everything they could to honor this man."Event organizers said caravans of supporters were expected from various parts of the county and beyond, including Fresno and Los Angeles.
