A transient was behind bars today on suspicion of snatching purses and wallets from at least a dozen employees at various Gaslamp District restaurants in recent weeks.

San Diego police arrested Christopher Andrew Glasby, 34, in Pacific Beach on Wednesday, SDPD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said. He was booked into county jail on multiple counts of burglary and identity theft.

Glasby is suspected of filching billfolds and handbags from his victims after distracting them by turning in an employment resume or asking for a job application. He would then allegedly use the employees' credit to buy gift cards, which he would spend on himself.

The thefts, which occurred between early May and mid-June, resulted in total losses of about $2,000, Munoz said.

A citizen's tip to San Diego County Crime Stoppers led police to Glasby.

The suspect is scheduled to be arraigned Friday afternoon in downtown San Diego.
