Arraignment Scheduled For Pedicab Driver In Fatal Fall

SAN DIEGO -- Arraignment is scheduled Thursday for a pedicab driver facing manslaughter charges in connection with a July 4th accident that killed a retired schoolteacher.Sukru Safa Cinar, 23, was arrested Tuesday as he prepared to start work.According to police, Cinar was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter but the San Diego County District Attorney's Office said he would be charged with involuntary manslaughter.A final decision on what, if any, charges will be filed will be made after authorities review the case Thursday morning.If convicted of involuntary manslaughter, Cinar faces a maximum sentence of four years in prison, according to Paul Levikow, a spokesman for the District Attorney's Office.The fatal accident occurred shortly before noon Saturday on Martin Luther King Promenade. Retired schoolteacher Sharon Miller, who was riding in Cinar's three-wheeled pedal taxi with a friend, fell out as he allegedly swerved side to side on the pedestrian path, where he was riding in violation of posted signs, said San Diego police Assistant Chief Guy Swanger.The 60-year-old Illinois resident, who was in San Diego with her husband to attend a national education conference, fell onto a sidewalk and suffered a severe head injury. She was pronounced dead Sunday at UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest.Cinar's pedicab was not equipped with seat belts, authorities said.
