CHULA VISTA, Calif. - A 2-year-old boy found alone in a stroller just before midnight in Chula Vista was taken into protective custody and his 53-year-old grandfather was arrested on suspicion of child neglect and being under the influence of drugs, police said Saturday.
A skateboarder came across the toddler asleep in the blue jogging stroller about 11:30 p.m. on Quintard Street near Second Avenue, police said.
The boy appeared to have been well cared-for and showed no signs of abuse, police said.
Officers searched the area, but were unable to locate the boy's parents, and he was taken into protective custody, police said. The boy's hysterical 17-year-old mother called looking for the child about 2:45 a.m., authorities said.
Police officials said that the boy's grandfather, Frank Moreno of Chula Vista, had apparently taken the child to get a burrito around 10 p.m. When family members began looking for the child around 1 a.m., they spotted the grandfather in a taco shop eating a burrito, police said.
Moreno allegedly said he did not know where the child was, and appeared to have been under the influence of a controlled substance, police said.
Officers responded and arrested Moreno, and he was later booked into jail, police said.
