OCEANSIDE, Calif. -

A 2-year-old boy sustained fatal injuries when he was stuck by a truck in an alley off an Oceanside street, police said Saturday.

The boy was hit at about 6 p.m. Friday by a northbound 2012 Toyota Tundra driven by a 55-year-old Fallbrook man who had only travelled a few feet from where the vehicle was parked in a west alley off the 400 block of North Horne Street, according to Oceanside police Lt. Leonard Mata.

The toddler was playing with other children in an apartment building courtyard when he darted out into the path of the driver, a friend of the boy's family, who had just dropped off food for a barbecue, U-T San Diego reported.

The child was taken to Rady Children's Hospital where he died, Mata said.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash and no arrests were made, he said.
