Two young women inspecting a damaged car alongside Interstate 8 in the Midway area were struck and severely injured by a vehicle, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The 20-year-old driver of a 2014 Ford Focus had pulled into the center median near Sports Arena Boulevard after a part from a wheel well into the roadway around 7:10 p.m. Thursday, according to the CHP. She and her 21-year-old passenger got out to inspect the damage.

A 22-year-old man behind the wheel of an 2005 Saturn Ion lost control and swerved to avoid the piece that had come off the Ford and struck both women and the car, according to a CHP statement.

The Ford's driver was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital and her passenger went to UC San Diego Medical Center. Both were being treated for major but non-life-threatening injuries, according to the CHP. The Saturn's driver was not hurt.
