LA MESA, Calif. - Two people survived a scare early Thursday morning when the car they were in caught fire as they were heading home.
The Toyota Corolla was traveling in the 4300 block of Calavo Drive in La Mesa at about 1:45 a.m. when the driver said the lights on the dashboard started to blink and the vehicle began to stall.
The driver said he knew the situation was not good, so he immediately pulled over and told his friend they needed to get out of the car. The front end of the car burst into flames soon after, prompting the occupants to call 911.
Firefighters arrived and were able to quickly put out the fire coming from the engine.
No injuries were reported, but the car is a total loss.
Investigators said they aren't sure what caused the engine to catch fire, but the driver told 10News he was involved in a minor accident earlier in the evening and he believes that may have had something to do with the blaze.
