FALLBROOK -- Sheriff's deputies sought Friday up to a half dozen people who attacked and stabbed two young men outside a Fallbrook apartment complex.

The 20- and 22-year-old victims were confronted by four to six men as they walked through the apartment buildings on South Vine Street near West Clemmens Lane shortly before 10 p.m. Monday. Members of the group exchanged "heated words" with the victims, then attacked, sheriff's Sgt. Dwain Washington said.

The older victim was stabbed once as the pair attempted to flee. They headed to the back of an apartment building, but several of the suspects caught up and one stabbed the second victim, according to the sergeant. Both victims were taken to a hospital in an unknown condition.

The suspects were wearing dark clothing and hooded sweatshirts. A couple were using bandannas to cover their faces. Washington said they may have fled in an older white Honda Civic seen pulling out of the parking lot with its lights off and heading south on South Vine Street.
