Michael Claude Roe, 45, had lived with his minor son in an apartment in Lakeside, according to the Medical Examiner's Office. Roe's passenger was identified as 49-year-old Steven Boyd Bossenbroek.

The men were in a pickup truck traveling westbound on Interstate 8 at normal highway speeds at about 11:10 a.m. Thursday when their vehicle veered to the right off the roadway, hit a tree, overturned and pinned them inside the wreckage.

According to the Medical Examiner's report, a witness stopped to render aid but was unable to free the men and placed a 911 emergency call. They were pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel due to multiple blunt force injuries.

California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Pennings said Roe was wearing a seat belt but his passenger was not. The officer said there was no initial evidence of drugs or alcohol involved.
