CHULA VISTA, Calif. - An investigation was under way Monday in Chula Vista, where a 50-year-old man and 57-year-old woman were fatally struck by a car operated by a young motorist.

The pedestrians were struck while crossing Fourth Avenue mid-block from Eucalyptus Park around 6 p.m. Sunday, according to Chula Vista police Capt. Gary Wedge.

The car that hit them was being driven by a 24-year-old Chula Vista resident who was heading north on Fourth Avenue, Wedge said in a statement.

The man, who lived in San Diego, died at the scene, while the woman, a Chula Vista resident, died at an area hospital shortly after the accident, Wedge said. Their names were withheld pending family notification.

Chula Vista police Lt. Don Redmond told U-T San Diego that the driver was questioned at the scene and released. Alcohol did not appear to be a factor, he said.
