SAN DIEGO – Two men were arrested in connection with a carjacking and assault in the Mid-City area Thursday morning.

San Diego police report that the incident began before 5:11 a.m. when the male victim picked up a man and woman in a Mercedes at 4900 University Ave. He then drove them to the 4200 block of 51st Street, where a second man got in the car.

The two male passengers then proceeded to assault the driver, who got out of the car and ran. He flagged down a patrol car and informed officers what had just transpired.

A short while later, the Mercedes was spotted a few blocks from where the carjacking had occurred, outside a 7-Eleven convenience store at University and Winona avenues. According to witnesses, the suspects pulled into the 7-Eleven parking lot and one of them tried to run into the store. Both men were apprehended.

They were identified as 36-year-old Alfred Reyes and 23-year-old Manuel Gonzalez. Both were booked into the San Diego County Jail, police said. The whereabouts of the female passenger was not confirmed. The victim told officers that the suspects were armed with a gun, but that was also not confirmed.

What prompted them to attack the driver was not known. He suffered minor injuries.

Detectives are continuing to investigate.
