Two beaches in Imperial Beach were opened to the public this weekend, after being closed for several weeks due to contamination from Mexico, according to the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health.

The DEH lifted the water contact closure Friday for the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge and Border Field State Park shorelines after recent testing confirmed the water quality met state health standards, the agency said
in a statement.

The opened area includes the beaches stretching from the international border to the south end of Seacoast Drive.

Water quality testing conducted by DEH confirmed that recent Tijuana River flows were no longer impacting these beaches. The area was closed to water contact due to sewage-contaminated flows from the Tijuana River entering the United States.
