UPDATED: 10:48 pm PDT July 3, 2009

A 26-year-old man was fatally shot Friday at a Valencia Park home, San Diego police said.

Witnesses reported hearing gunshots at 5223 Santa Margarita St. around 2:30 p.m., and police found one shooting victim, said San Diego police Lt. Kevin Rooney.

According to preliminary reports, the victim, identified as Philip Carrillo Aguilar, 26, was in the front room of the home with two companions - described only as Latino males in their early 20s - just before the shooting occurred, Rooney said.

The companions left the home after hearing the gunshots.

Carrillo Aguilar died at Mercy Hospital in San Diego, according to a San Diego Fire-Rescue dispatcher.

The motive is unknown, Rooney said.

Anyone with information regarding this shooting was asked to call the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or (888) 580-8477.
