Local Business Accused Of Leaving Customers Out To Dry

POSTED: 3:45 pm PDT July 2, 2009
UPDATED: 5:30 pm PDT July 2, 2009

The signs at El Dorado Cleaners on 3rd Street in Chula Vista say the place should be open.

However, the doors are locked and the lights are off.

Mia Aguilar, who works next door at Hungry Hank Deli, told 10News, "It's been closed for 3 months."

For three months Aguilar said that many people asked what happened to the store, as bags of clothes still sit on the counter and hang inside.

Aguilar said the property managers did post signs that let customers know the days and time they could pick up their clothes.

However, it appears many people may not have received the word and are now struggling to get their belongings.

"They come in and want their clothes back. One thing I can do is give them the landlord's number," said Aguilar.

10News called that number but no one has returned any phone calls.

According to the Better Business Bureau, customer service is not one of El Dorado Cleaners' strengths. The BBB gave the store an F grade well before it closed down.

"That's an indicator of how this company handles consumers," said Sheryl Bilbrey of the Better Business Bureau.

The BBB said El Dorado is just one example of how more consumers are being affected by companies that are closing down.

To avoid being in that situation, the BBB wants consumers to know that there are telltale signs.

"A lot of times when a business starts getting in trouble they staring having problems with customer service. The rating will drop from an A to a B to a C," said Bilbrey.

The BBB recommended checking out a business's Web site to screen it, even if it is one that is trusted.

"Every day there are companies that have been doing business for a long time and are struggling right now. Some of them are able to do business as usual, others are affecting the consumer," said Bilbrey.
