City Taking Donations To Keep Fire Pits Open

City Needs $173,000 To Keep Pits Open

The city needs to raise $173,000 to keep the fire pits open at San Diego's beaches and bays and is now accepting donations by credit card, Mayor Jerry Sanders' office announced Thursday.

Donations can be made by clicking on the "Donate Now" button on the Web site www.sandiego.gov/philanthropycenter.

Budget cuts forced the city to eliminate funding for the fire pits last year. But when workers began removing the 5-by 5-foot concrete barriers, an anonymous donor gave $259,500 to save the program.

The city needs $173,000 by Dec. 15 to ensure the fire pit program is funded next year, according to the mayor's office. So far, the city has received only $180 in donations.
