POSTED: 4:34 pm PDT June 30, 2009
SAN DIEGO -- A man accused of stabbing his estranged wife and her fiance outside a liquor store in Mountain View was ordered Tuesday to stand trial on charges of premeditated murder and making a criminal threat.Miguel Angel Delvalle, 48, of Imperial Beach, faces consecutive life sentences if convicted, said Deputy District Attorney Dan Link. After a five hour preliminary hearing, Judge Leo Valentine Jr. ruled there was enough evidence presented to warrant a trial. The defendant allegedly tracked the victims down at 8:30 a.m. on April 21, at Mike's Market on Ocean View Boulevard.Delvalle allegedly slashed two tires on his estranged wife's car, then stabbed her fiance a couple of times outside the store. The male victim backpedaled into the market, where the defendant allegedly stabbed him 12 more times. That part of the attack was captured by a nearby surveillance camera, Link said.Link alleged that the defendant left the store and confronted his estranged wife, telling her, "I killed him. Now I'm gonna kill you."Delvalle chased the woman three blocks and knocked her to the ground, then stabbed her three times in the neck, the prosecutor alleged. The defendant was arrested when he checked himself into a veterans hospital to be treated for cuts to his hands, Link said.San Diego police Lt. Karen Tenney said the wounded woman had an active restraining order against the defendant due to a previous domestic violence incident. The couple have one child together, Link said.Delvalle -- who is being held on $1.5 million bail -- will be back in court July 15 for arraignment in Superior Court and to get a trial date.
