SAN DIEGO -- An apparently suicidal woman spotted standing on the Coronado Bridge Thursday got into her car and fled when officers approached, leading a 20-minute road chase that ended back on the landmark span, where she pulled over and leaped into the San Diego Bay, but survived the fall. The woman was reported standing on the bridge with her hand on the south-facing railing shortly after 10 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. When police tried to contact her minutes later, she got behind the wheel of a white sedan and drove into Coronado, then doubled back and got back onto the bridge, crossed into San Diego and entered northbound Interstate 5, said CHP Officer Ray Scheidnes.
The woman got off the freeway at Sea World Drive, ran a red light, headed west briefly before turning around and getting back onto the freeway, this time heading south. In the Midtown area, the fleeing driver exited at Washington Street and merged onto Kettner Boulevard, then re-entered southbound I-5 and passed through downtown San Diego.Back in Barrio Logan, she got onto the Coronado Bridge once more, then stopped, got out of her car and jumped over the edge, Scheidnes said.Harbor police officers soon located the woman and pulled her out near J Street Pier, and medics took her to a hospital. Her name and condition were not released.Following the pursuit, part of the bridge was briefly closed, but traffic was flowing smoothly again by 11 a.m., according to Scheidnes.
