Men Sentenced For Stealing Bronze Pig Statue

CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- Two men who used a pickup truck to knock a bronze pig statue off its base in front of a Chula Vista restaurant, then stole the $15,000 statue, were each sentenced Tuesday to time in the county jail.Oren Hertz, 34, pleaded guilty to grand theft and receiving stolen property in connection with a stolen trailer parked on a woman's property.Armando Cesena, 35, pleaded guilty to grand theft.
South Bay Judge Timothy Walsh sentenced Hertz to three years probation and 365 days in jail, and ordered the defendant to enter a residential drug treatment program when he gets out of custody.The judge also imposed but suspended a prison term of five years and eight months for Hertz.Cesena was sentenced to 270 days in jail and ordered to enter the drug treatment program upon release from custody.The defendants were ordered to pay $455 to reinstall the 3-foot-tall pig in front of Miguel's Cantina, said Deputy District Attorney Michael Macneil.Hertz and Cesena were caught on videotape April 5 stealing the bronze statue. They dropped the pig off in front of a library April 16 and turned themselves in four days later.
