Police: Objects Found On Beach Part Of Web Game

Items Discovered On Fiesta Island's Dog Beach

Authorities investigating suspicious objects spotted at Fiesta Island's dog beach Monday said the items were part of a worldwide, Internet-based scavenger hunt.

A passer-by reported seeing a plastic pipe tied to a tree at the popular dog beach lot at 11 a.m., said San Diego police spokesman Gary Hassan.

A bomb squad identified the pipe as part of a game called Geocaching, according to Hassan.

On the Geocaching Web site, the game is described as a "high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with (global positioning) devices."

Participants locate the hidden containers, called geocaches, using global positioning systems and then write about the hunt online, the game's Web site explains.
