SAN DIEGO -- San Diego County Assistant Sheriff Jim Cooke will assume the role of Undersheriff next month, a department spokeswoman said Monday.Cooke will replace Undersheriff Bill Gore, who is set to be sworn in as the county's 29th Sheriff on July 3, according to Jan Caldwell, public affairs officer for the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.Cooke, a 29-year department veteran, was selected for the promotion by Gore, Caldwell said.
Earlier this month, Gore, 61, was selected by the county Board of Supervisors to finish out the remainder of Sheriff Bill Kolender's term. The 73-year-old said he is retiring midterm to care for his ailing wife.Kolender's term runs through 2010. Five local lawmen, including Gore, have already declared their intentions to run.
