The reward offered for information leading to the arrest of whoever fired on churchgoers outside a Lincoln Park liquor store on New Year's Day, killing two women, now stands at $10,000.

San Diego City Councilman Charles Lewis and members of the group 100 Black Men United announced Wednesday a $9,000 addition to an existing reward fund of $1,000 for information about the double slaying.

The activists trying to identify those responsible for the suspected gang ambush in the 5000 block of Logan Avenue "believe that actions talk" louder than anticrime rhetoric, an organizer said in announcing their donations.

"And we put our money where our mouth is, because we are tired of the violence and we want the perpetrators caught," said The Rev. Harry Cooper of Southeast Presbyterian Church.

The five-figure reward will be available to any tipster who provides information leading to arrests in the case, said Jim Johnson of San Diego County Crime Stoppers, which will manage the fund.

Slain in the 1 a.m. barrage of gunfire were 45-year-old Carol Waites, who lived in the nearby Valencia Park district, and Sharon Burton, 32, of Temecula. An 8-year-old boy was also critically wounded.

The victims were outside Dr. J's Liquor following a late-night New Year's Eve church service when the attackers arrived in at least one car, got out and fired as many as 50 shots, according to police.

As the killers fled, one of the wounded women staggered into the store, where she died. Medics took the other one to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries a short time later.

Emergency crews found an unscathed toddler in a child safety seat in a car riddled with bullets.

Officials urge anyone with information about the assailants to call Crime Stoppers' anonymous tip line at (888) 580-8477.
