A cyclist riding home from a bar in Encinitas was injured Friday morning when she was hit by a van operated by a hit-and-run driver, a sheriff's sergeant said.

The victim and her girlfriend were riding their bicycles home on southbound Coast Highway 101 near Chesterfield Drive when the accident occurred around 1 a.m., according to San Diego County sheriff's Sgt. Thomas Yancey.

The driver, who was driving an older tan colored box-shaped van, initially got out of his vehicle and told the victim's girlfriend that he would move his van to a safer location and return but he never did, Yancey said. He was last seen driving toward Solana Beach, according to the sergeant.

Paramedics took the victim to Scripps La Jolla Hospital for treatment, Yancey said.
