SAN DIEGO -- A truck and flatbed trailer jackknifed and overturned on Interstate 15 near Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Monday, creating a traffic jam that lasted for hours, authorities reported. The accident occurred about 9 a.m. near Miramar Way. A boom attached to the northbound big rig struck an overpass near Miramar Way, according to the California Highway Patrol. The truck, which was hauling a large cylindrical water tank, toppled onto its driver's side and spilled roughly 10 gallons of diesel fuel on the road, CHP public affairs Officer Brad Baehr said.
Emergency crews had to free the trucker, 52-year-old Matt Ream, of Valley Center, from the damaged cab. The crash left Ream with minor scrapes and abrasions that did not require hospital treatment, Baehr said.A hazardous materials team cleaned up the spilled fuel. Caltrans engineers inspected the overcrossing and deemed it structurally sound.
