SAN DIEGO -- No televised coverage will be allowed this summer of the trial of a convicted rapist accused in the 1993 strangulation deaths of two South Bay boys, a judge has ruled.
Scott Erskine, 39, faces trial Aug. 14 on charges that he murdered Jonathan Sellers, 9, and Charlie Keever, 13.
Prosecutor Valerie Summers also wants a jury to hear evidence alleging that Erskine raped and killed a woman in Palm Beach, Fla. in 1989.
In denying the motion to allow cameras, Superior Court Judge Kenneth So also said he will not permit them on the same floor as the courtroom.
Erskine faces the death penalty if convicted of killing the boys, who disappeared March 27, 1993, while riding their bicycles after eating lunch in Palm City.
In March 2001, authorities announced that DNA found on the victims matched that of Erskine, who was already serving 70 years to life for rape.
In December, defense attorney Larry Ainbinder said he was considering telling a jury Erskine suffers from possible brain damage or a brain disorder.
