CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- A student at a Chula Vista elementary school tested positive for tuberculosis, prompting San Diego County health officials Wednesday to notify those who were possibly exposed. The infected student attended Cook Elementary School, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency. The HHSA sent letters to the parents of the infected student's classmates, said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. Health officials also gave a health presentation for parents, and will perform testing at the school for those who may have been exposed.
"TB is treatable and curable, so anyone exposed to TB should get tested," Wooten said. "Most people exposed do not develop the disease, but it is recommended that they get tested to be sure."According to Wooten, TB is not uncommon in San Diego County. There have been 72 confirmed cases of TB locally this year. In 2008, there were 264 cases of the disease.Symptoms of active TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss.
