Mediterranean Fruit Flies Found In Mira Mesa

A quarantine was enacted in parts of Mira Mesa after more Mediterranean fruit flies were discovered in the area, San Diego County agriculture officials announced Tuesday.

Three medflies and 14 larvae were found one mile away from the area in Mira Mesa where one of the insects was previously discovered May 22.

"Finding the fruit fly larvae means that it is necessary to remove ripe and near-ripe fruit within a 100-meter-radius around the second find site," said county Agriculture Commissioner Robert Atkins.

"Additionally, we are asking the public to not remove fruit and vegetables from the Mira Mesa area," he said.

California Department of Food and Agriculture staff will treat and remove fruit from the area where the medflies were found.

The Mediterranean fruit fly is known to damage more than 260 different fruits and vegetables. Damage occurs when the female lays eggs inside the fruit, which hatch into maggots that tunnel through the flesh, making the fruit inedible.
