Police: Men Shot At Car In Road Rage Incident

POSTED: 4:40 am PDT June 2, 2009
UPDATED: 8:25 am PDT June 2, 2009

Two men are in custody Tuesday after one of them shot at the hood of a moving car in southeastern San Diego in an outbreak of road rage stemming from a traffic dispute that began in Lemon Grove, police said.

The shooting occurred in the 6100 block of Radio Drive near 60th Street in Emerald Hills shortly before 9:30 p.m. Monday, said San Diego police Sgt. David Jennings.

The victim told officers he was driving in Lemon Grove when he got into some sort of traffic dispute with another motorist, who then followed him into San Diego, Jennings said.

Once the victim was in San Diego, someone in a black Ford Explorer waved a gun at him, then fired the weapon twice at his Mitsubishi Gallant, Jennings said, adding that one round hit the car's hood but no one was hurt.

A few minutes later, an officer spotted a black Ford Explorer nearby and pulled over the vehicle.

The driver and a passenger were detained for questioning and later arrested, Jennings said, adding that a handgun was taken into evidence.

One of those arrested was Richard Ballard, 30.

He was booked into county jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, according to Jennings.

The other man's name was not immediately released.
