LAKESIDE, Calif. -- A 32-year-old Chula Vista man driving on the wrong side of the road was killed Monday morning when his truck collided with another on top of a hill on a residential street in the East County, authorities said. The man, whose name was withheld, was driving a 2003 Dodge Dakota on the wrong side of the road when his vehicle collided with a 2004 Dodge truck headed in the opposite direction near the intersection of Lake Jennings Road and Jack Oak Road around 5 a.m., California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Brian Pennings said. The other driver, identified as Benjamin Jessop, 51, of Utah, was traveling about 45-50 miles per hour at the time of the crash, Pennings said, adding that Jessop was taken to the hospital with back pains."Jessop swerved to the left and applied his brakes in an effort to avoid a collision," Pennings said. "(But) he was unable to avoid the collision and struck the Dakota head-on."The name of the decreased driver was withheld pending family notification.Neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to be a factor in the crash, according to Pennings.
