SAN DIEGO -- San Diego police Sunday are seeking a gunman who was wearing a black wrestler's mask when he shot an 18-year-old man to death in Normal Heights. Shots were fired about 10:45 p.m. Saturday in a cul-de-sac at the south end of 40th Street near Meade Avenue, nearly under the Escondido (15) Freeway, said San Diego police Lt. Kevin Rooney of the homicide unit. Officers found Stephen Cormier, 18, with several gunshot wounds, Rooney said.
Police and paramedics were unable to save Cormier, who died at the scene. Rooney said the victim had been inside a home in the 4300 block of 39th Street when a man wearing a black "luchador" mask, black nylon jacket, black denim shorts and black gloves came to the door. Cormier stepped outside, talking with the man, and then they walked south in the alley east of 39th Street. When they got to the cul-de-sac at 40th, they began fighting and the masked man pulled out a handgun and shot Cormier, according to Rooney. The shooter ran to a white Ford Explorer parked at the curb and driven by a man described as Hispanic and in his mid-20s with short hair and wearing a dark blue San Diego Chargers jersey. The suspects were at large early Sunday. Police asked anyone with more information to call the homicide unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
