SAN DIEGO -- A species of fruit fly known to damage more than 260 types of fruits, vegetables and plants was discovered this week in Mira Mesa, San Diego County agriculture officials announced Friday. The discovery of the Mediterranean fruit fly prompted county pest control officials to begin treating the area.Intensive trapping by the county and the California Department of Food and Agriculture will also be done over an 81-square-mile area near where the fruit fly was found.
"Homeowners and people moving through the area should not remove fruits and vegetables from the area because they may be infested," said San Diego County Agricultural Commissioner Robert Atkins. The area where the crop-destroying pest was discovered was outside the boundaries of an already established Medfly quarantine area El Cajon and Spring Valley.
