3 More Navy Anti-Mine Ships Relocated To SD

POSTED: 6:51 am PDT May 22, 2009

Three more Navy mine countermeasure ships previously based in Texas will arrive at their new homeport in San Diego Friday.

The anti-mine ships USS Champion, USS Devastator and USS Pioneer, which were previously homeported in Ingleside, Texas, will now call Naval Base San Diego home, according to Third Fleet public affairs.

The move is part of the "consolidation of mine warfare surface assets in one location to align resources, consolidate expertise and increase cost savings in maintenance, training and operations," according to a Navy statement.

The anti-mine ships USS Chief and USS Warrior arrived at Naval Base San Diego from Texas last month.

The ships' move follows a Defense Base Relocation and Closure Commission decision to shutter Naval Station Ingleside.
