Suspect In La Mesa Home Invasion In Custody

POSTED: 6:36 am PDT May 20, 2009

A 33-year-old man is in custody Wednesday on suspicion of being one of two men who forced their way into a La Mesa home and beat the occupant before leading police on a foot chase, police said.

Carlos Francisco Salazar of Lemon Grove was arrested around 9 p.m. Tuesday shortly after he and Joe Clay Rupe, 37, of Descanso forced their way into a home in the 6100 block of Avenorra Drive, said La Mesa police Lt. Matt Nicholass.

Officers on their way to the scene spotted the suspects fleeing in a white Ford pickup truck and stopped the vehicle in the 5500 block of Arizona Avenue, Nicholass said.

Both suspects fled on foot, but Salazar was found a short while later while Rupe remained at large, he said.

The victim knows Rupe but does not know Salazar, Nicholass said.

Both Rupe and Salazar punched the victim in the face several times. He was left with cuts but refused medical treatment, Nicholass said.

Salazar was booked into San Diego County Jail on suspicion of felony battery and burglary. The investigation is continuing, Nicholass said.
