SAN DIEGO -- There are new concerns about another illness making its way across the U.S.-Mexico border. The disease has already killed five children in Baja California. The bacteria, known as Rickettsia, are found in ticks so humans and pets, or anyone around them, could be at risk.Local health officials said they have not yet found the bacteria in San Diego County, but like the swine flu it could just be a matter of time.County health officials fear ticks could carry Rickettisa, which can cause Rocky Mountain spotted fever.Rocky Mountain spotted fever is a fast-moving disease that has already claimed the lives of five children in Mexicali.More than 100 people have been infected in Baja, with some cases being reported in Tijuana where animal control officers are putting down stray dogs to get a handle on the problem.County health officials are concerned the bacteria may soon be found in San Diego.Experts said the ticks carry the disease and can pass it to dogs, who can then give it to anyone around.County veterinarians said the best way to keep yourself and your pets safe are to have dogs go through flea and tick treatments.Researchers are in the middle of developing a test to screen for the bacteria in ticks, and testing could begin as early as next month.10News spoke to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials, who said they have not received any word on screening pets coming across the border. However, they said if any pets look like they are sick, agents will call local county health officials for further investigation.
