SDSU Campus Police Investigate Alleged Rape

UPDATED: 6:29 pm PDT May 7, 2009

San Diego State University campus police are investigating a report of a rape on campus, 10News reported.

The alleged attack happened at the Kappa Alpha fraternity house, campus police said.

Many students at SDSU said Greek parties have a reputation.

"People joke around, you know, 'Don't go to Kappa Alpha; you might get raped,' or something like that," said student Michael Kendra.

According to campus police, a female student reported she was raped at the Kappa Alpha frat house by a fraternity member on March 23.

Some students 10News spoke to were not surprised by the incident.

"I wouldn't be surprised at any house really. The Greek system I guess has a stigma for this type of thing. But then again they do a lot of good things, too," said one students.

Other students said the alleged rape was shocking.

"It's more scary than anything, you know what I mean? It's a little surprising. I hope it doesn't happen very often but at the same time we wouldn't ever really know," said student Samantha Frank.

Frank said she wishes SDSU made students more aware when rapes are reported.

"I just think that they don't want to draw that type of negative attention to San Diego State," said Frank.

Greek members spoke to 10News off camera, and said too often frat members are falsely accused of rape by women who are angry. Frank said she has heard the same story.

"People always, you know, try to make bigger deals of things that don't really need to be. And if it draws negative attention to the people they are mad at … but it's a publicity move, I guess you can say, for them," said Frank.

Reported rapes on the SDSU campus are up, 10News learned.

In 2005, four rapes were reported on campus. In 2006 the number went up to 8, and 10 rapes were reported in 2007.

Campus police denied a 10News request for an on-camera interview but said most of those cases were never prosecuted because there was not enough evidence.
