ESCONDIDO, Calif. -- Three middle-school students -- two girls and a boy -- were in custody Monday in connection with a possibly gang-related stabbing that seriously wounded a 14-year-old girl at an Escondido home over the weekend. The victim made an emergency call about 1:30 p.m. Sunday to report that she'd been stabbed at the residence in the 700 block of Goldenrod Street, Lt. Craig Carter said.Medics took her to Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, where she was listed in "stable but guarded" condition, according to Carter. The victim, who suffered multiple wounds to her upper body, was expected to survive, according to police.Officers arrested two 14-year-old girls shortly after arriving at the scene of the assault. The third student, also 14, was arrested late Monday morning, the lieutenant said. All three students -- who allegedly stole a video-game system from the home where the stabbing occurred -- were booked into juvenile hall on suspicion of attempted murder, conspiracy and burglary. Their names were withheld because they are minors.Carter, who declined to discuss what might have motivated the stabbing, said it was unclear if the victim was acquainted with the suspects. Gang unit detectives were investigating, he said.
