New Red-Light Cameras Activated

POSTED: 2:39 pm PDT April 30, 2009
UPDATED: 3:05 pm PDT April 30, 2009

Surveillance cameras aimed at increasing traffic safety by capturing images of vehicles driven by red-light runners -- leaving them facing costly citations -- went into operation Thursday at three more San Diego intersections.

The newly installed photo-enforcement equipment will monitor stoplight compliance at Balboa Avenue and Kearny Villa Road in Kearny Mesa; Genesee Avenue and North Torrey Pines Road in the Torrey Pines area; and Nimitz Boulevard and Rosecrans Street in the Roseville/Fleetridge neighborhood, according to police.

The cameras, which are now trained on 15 road crossings in the city, take photos of the front and back of offenders' autos and shoot 12-second video snippets of them, SDPD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said.

The devices are triggered by roadway sensors that activate when a traffic light turns red.

"A motorist who is caught in the intersection while the signal light is yellow will not be photographed," Munoz said.

A stoplight-running violation carries a minimum fine of $436. For the next 30 days, however, offenders busted at the newly equipped road crossing will receive penalty-free warning notices, she said.

The other intersections monitored by the cameras are:
  • A Street at 10th Avenue in the Core-Columbia district
  • Aero Drive at Murphy Canyon Road in Serra Mesa
  • Camino del Rio North at Mission Center Road in Mission Valley
  • Camino del Rio North at Qualcomm Way in Mission Valley
  • Clairemont Mesa Boulevard at Convoy Street in Kearny Mesa
  • Cleveland Avenue at Washington Street in University Heights
  • El Camino Real at Del Mar Heights Road in the North City area
  • Garnet Avenue at Mission Bay Drive in Pacific Beach
  • Grape Street at North Harbor Drive in the Harborview area
  • Mira Mesa Boulevard at Scranton Road in Sorrento Valley
  • Mira Mesa Boulevard and Westview Parkway in Mira Mesa
  • 10th Avenue at F Street in the downtown East Village district
