SAN DIEGO -- Convicted sex offender Matthew Hedge is spending his first night away from Coalinga State Hospital in his new home just outside of Donovan State Prison. With Hedge's arrival on Friday came a brand new community notification from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department and a new address -- 480 Alta Road, a trailer on the Donovan prison grounds. While Hedge has been released, 10News learned that he is hardly a free man."This is not the ideal spot for him to live. This is like a last choice as far as where to house him," said Lt. Michael Stout, with Donovan State Prison. Many educators agreed, since San Ysidro High School is just six miles away that Hedge shouldn't be in their community again."Especially since he'd been living there before and he offended and they had to send him back in for more treatment, and now they're bringing him back. I just don't think it's fair for our students and our community," said Sheila Krotz, a teacher at San Ysidro High School. In 1989, Hedge was convicted of molesting four children. He was released in 2005 but violated the conditions of his parole just three months later.Hedge had to sign off on 95 conditions of release, including no Internet access, long-distance phone cards or alcohol consumption.Despite the restrictions, many doubt the treatment will work."We're not opposed to his release. We're opposed to the fact that he's being placed again in a community that has already had him," said San Ysidro High School Principal Hector Espinoza.Hedge's move to the trailer angered Rep. Bob Filner. In a statement to 10News, Filner said: "In Matthew Hedge's case, the criminal justice system is being unjust to communities in the south County. We have absorbed too many convicted criminals and when we protested, we were not heard."Liberty Health Care now supervises Hedge's every move through a GPS tracker.Hedge will officially register with the sheriff's department on Monday.
