SAN DIEGO -- A local company is combining volunteerism and food to bring consumers big savings.Sherry Vick picked up her groceries from a program called Golden Share Foods."There are five little pizzas in here and they're delicious. It was very easy; we just go on the Internet and sign up for what we want," said Vick.Once she pays for her order, Vick just goes and picks up her food. She uses the program to save money and help her family."I could start getting these groceries on a monthly basis, and then I share them also with my son and my granddaughters so that it helps them out at this time. They're feeling the pressures of the economy," said Vick.Corey Russo, executive director of Golden Share Foods, said while the company is more than four years old, the current economic crisis is bringing more people to the program."We average anywhere from 42 percent to 50 percent savings on our packages in comparison to your large chain grocery stores," said Russo. The reason people are able to save so much money is because those who use the service also volunteer their time to sort and package the food."We have kids from 16 to senior citizens. We actually have some who are over 80 that do come and help out just because they want to help out. They want to be involved in something in the community and make a difference, and that's what we're doing here," said Russo. At the warehouse, volunteers pack boxes full of fresh fruits and vegetables along with different meats. Then the orders are taken to different locations where people like Vick are ready to pick up their orders."Let's see what we got this time. What I like is I notice the produce is very fresh; I like that," said Vick.Vick said she likes the money she saves on her grocery bill each month.
