SAN DIEGO -- An Imperial Beach man suspected of stabbing his estranged wife and her male companion in a Mountain View-area neighborhood Tuesday was arrested when he showed up at a veterans hospital to be treated for cuts to his hands, authorities said.Miguel Angel Delvalle, 48, allegedly confronted the victims at a market in the 3600 block of Ocean View Boulevard about 8:30 a.m., then attacked his former spouse's companion, according to San Diego police. After repeatedly stabbing the man in the torso, Delvalle walked out of the store, and then went back inside and knifed him some more, SDPD Lt. Karen Tenney alleged. As the assault played out, the woman fled to her car, but was unable to leave in it because the tires had been slashed. She then ran off to the north, and the assailant gave chase, Tenney said. A few blocks away, in the 3600 block of Franklin Avenue, Delvalle caught up with her and allegedly stabbed her in the neck. The wounded woman staggered off, bleeding profusely. A block and a half away, she collapsed in front of a church, the lieutenant said. Delvalle, meanwhile, left the area in a red car, according to police.Medics took both victims to a hospital, where they underwent emergency surgery and were listed in critical condition. Despite the severity of their wounds, they were expected to survive, Tenney said.About 1 p.m., Delvalle showed up at Veterans Affairs Medical Center on La Jolla Village Drive for treatment of minor cuts. The hospital staff notified the police, and officers arrested the suspect without incident minutes later.Delvalle will likely face two counts of attempted murder, SDPD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said. The wounded woman has an active restraining order against her spouse due to a previous domestic-violence incident, Tenney said. The estranged couple are the parents of two elementary school-age children, she said. The lieutenant said she was unsure of the nature of the victims' relationship.
